Home Remodeling
This growing family in Ellicott City needed a larger space for family gathering and decided to expand the footprint of their two-story home with a family room home addition. The 21 x 18-foot addition was to be an open floor plan to the existing kitchen and dining rooms. Easy access to the beautiful back yard was important and patio doors were added to the addition opening to the brand new outdoor living space. The existing floor plan was linear in footprint with a family room at one end, then the kitchen and the dining room at the other end of the first floor. All three rooms were set in the back of the house and the family room had access to a wood deck. This design separated the family, but our solution to an open floorplan provided the ability for family interaction each day.
Before/After Family Room Home Addition Plans
The existing kitchen lacked an island and was limited in countertop workspace. Our new kitchen design extended several feet into the new addition allowing for a large island providing the family room for prepping meals, doing homework and catching up on the day. Floor to ceiling ivory painted Koch cabinets were installed with Lagos Blue Caesarstone tops that coordinate beautifully with the Blue Dunes granite island countertop. GE Profile Series stainless appliances add to the light-reflective quality of the painted cabinets and bring a bright and airy look. For a finishing touch, the handmade look blue tile backsplash with coordinating custom Lili Cement Tile focal point was created behind the stove. Gorgeous!
Open Floor Plan
Open floor plans are conducive to today’s lifestyle for including the cook in gathering with family and friends. The removal of walls between the family room home addition, kitchen and dining area creates a much larger space for entertaining guests. To create a seamless look we installed Mohawk Oak flooring throughout the first floor.
This family of four outgrew the existing family room and needed a new place to enjoy television viewing. The new family room is two-thirds larger than the previous one and as part of an open floor plan gives the room a spacious feel. After school and workday, the family can be together to prepare the meal, finish homework or catch up on the news. Three sets of double-hung windows, transoms and patio door add more natural light to the entire rear of the home.
To keep everything in order and out from underfoot a new mudroom provides a more efficient home. Custom cubbies were created for hanging coats, stowing backpacks and storing shoes and boots. By placing them with direct garage access keeps inclement weather mess out of the main living area and enables the wet gear to hang dry ready for the next day’s use. A growing family’s dream space!
Home Addition Blends Perfectly
To complete the home addition the client chose to include a new outdoor living space. Created in concrete pavers the patio is accessible from the new family room and the old family room now turned office. A great place to sit and relax or share a summer meal together enjoying the mature landscaping and secluded backyard. The new addition looks as though it was always there inside and outside!
